Valentina

Valentina

Valentina is a symbolic memorial placed beside Saint Valentine — for everyone who has ever loved, and for everyone who has ever received a note signed “your Valentine”.

Legend says that the imprisoned priest Valentine restored the sight of his jailer’s daughter and, before his execution on 14 February, left her a letter signed “from your Valentine” — the words later carried by every valentine card. In some tellings the girl is called Julia; in the 16th-century painting by Jacopo Bassano she is Saint Lucilla, baptized by Valentine.
